Cass McCombs - Humor Risk

As if receiving such recognition from Wit’s End less then six months ago wasn’t enough, Cass McCombs is back with another album. Humor Risk, works well against the torpid pull of Wit’s End, which delved into the darkest depths of the human psyche. McCombs begins his narrative ways in “Love Thine Enemy,” the first track. It’s a fuzzed out folk jam. He proclaims to “love thine enemy,” but he continues on “but hate the lack of sincerity.” It’s a slow moving spat of feeling like we’re forced into so many things, love being just one of those things. McCombs calls out the fakeness in our moral teachings.
McCombs soothing vocals and telltale lyrics guide you through a sort of trip across a mountainside or beachfront. The album has the pull to command an audience to a gentle sway. Humor Risk, though a quick release for a rather recent artist, is a solid album that may not be as drawn out as Wit’s End, but it’s concise storytelling offers another approach for McCombs to explore.
