Formed in 2001, in Victoria, British Columbia, Frog Eyes consists of only two permanent members: singer, songwriter and guitarist Carey Mercer and drummer Melanie Campbell, who is also Mercer’s wife. Previous members include Spencer Krug of Wolf Parade. Paul’s Tomb: A Triumph is Frog Eyes’ 9th album to date.
Like in the bands previous albums, Mercer’s easily-recognizable yelping falsetto floats and skips above fuzzy guitars, ringing keyboards and crashing drums in Paul’s Tomb. The album is trippy, yet still grounded. The tracks flow together to make one complete and connected, masterfully created album. Paul’s Tomb seamlessly blends longer tracks, such as the 9:08-minute opening track “A Flower in a Glove” with shorter tracks, such as the 1:57-minute “Lear, in the Park.” Paul’s Tomb is raw and unapologetic, showcasing the best of Mercer and Campbell.
